A commercial lawyer must be more than a legal adviser and throughout my work placements, I have enjoyed sourcing complex information to create a simple, informative and workable product for a client. I find the practice of applying the law against a commercial backdrop interesting.

My attraction to Dentons stems from my time at the London open day. Here, I learnt about the firm’s vast expertise across a diverse range of practice areas. Boasting a top tier reputation in banking, real estate and energy among other areas, trainees would benefit from a varied diet of work, developing into well rounded lawyers.

Covering over 60 jurisdictions, Dentons is a truly global firm that offers a unique opportunity to engage with complex, cross-border work. The firm’s launch in Tehran, partnering with APP Legal Institute, appealed to me as it demonstrates Dentons’s willingness to be dynamic by adapting to the region’s rapidly evolving economic situation. This particular association would enable me to utilise my background and linguistic ability in interacting with clients in Iran and the Middle East.

Dentons gives trainees real responsibility to take part in meaningful work. At firms where trainees do not engage in substantial work, it hinders the individual’s personal development while damaging the labour capital available to the firm. As Dentons trusts trainees to run deals and meet with clients, they will gain more experience, feel personally fulfilled and expand on their utility to the firm.

The office environment is inclusive and open. I spent some time with a Dentons associate, Christopher Perkins. Beyond giving me an insight in to his work in real estate, Christopher typified the friendly, collegial personality shared by all of the staff. Dentons’s culture promotes collaboration and the supportive environment will enable me to make the most of my training at the firm.
